Air Tours

At the moment, the only way to see "active" lava is by air; either fixed wing (airplane) or helicopter, with the helicopter being the best option.
2 hour flight depart from Waikoloa Heliport (about 50 minute drive from the Sheraton Kona Resort)
7 am, 9:15 am, 12:15 pm and 2:30 pm departure (45 minute prior check in is required)
The helicopter tour from this side of the island is approx. 2 hours long, flies across the island between the two mountains, out over the rainforest to the volcano crater & lava lake, & the flow field. Then on the way back to the resort along the North East coast with its' towering sea cliffs dotted with valleys & waterfalls ( you actually fly into a valley with a towering 2000 foot waterfall in the back of the valley).
** Although the volcano is currently active, there is no lava boat tour available because the lava is currently not flowing into the ocean at this time **

There are two different models of aircraft:
A-Star= $360 + fuel surcharge $79.20= $439.20
Eco-Star= $ 450+ fuel surcharge $99= $549.00
Special Discounts: Fly with Eco-Star with A-Star price for this 2 hours tour which is about $110 p/p discounts

Difference between the aircraft:
both seat six passengers + pilot. Most people are familiar with the A-Star as it is used by many police departments throughout the world and television news channels. Very powerful, stable aircraft, it has bench seats.
The Eco-Star was designed & built for air tour operations; it is a larger aircraft, 23% larger than the A-Star. It has bucket seats, 60 square feet of viewing glass & an enclosed tail rotor for superior noise reduction & a smoother flight.
Both are excellent reliable aircraft, built by American Eurocopter. Either way you choose to do it this island is beautiful from the air & there is so much that can only be seen from above.

50 minute flight depart from Hilo International Airport (about 2.5 to 3 hour driver from the Sheraton Kona).
9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4 pm departure (45 minute prior check in is required)

There is also 50 minute flight that takes off from Hilo & focuses only on the volcano. This flight takes off from the Hilo airport over the rainforest, out to the lava lake, then down the hill several miles to where the lava is popping out of the ground. Then down to where it was going into the ocean, back out over the rainforest & a couple of waterfalls as you re-enter Hilo. This flight requires you to drive to Hilo (2.5 hrs) so you would incorporate it into your volcano day. After the flight you can drive up to the park which is 45-50 mins from the Hilo airport.

A-Star : $178 per person + $39.20 fuel charge= $217.40
Eco-Star: $219 + $48 fuel surcharge = $267.18
